Freebies from Google

While Google isn’t going to give you $5k for sharing this post with all your friends, you can still cash in on a couple of decent freebies as part of Google Play’s 3rd Birthday Bash!

First, you have the “original” Transformers movie which is good for an hour or so of time-wasting. Yes I know it’s not the original, but it is the first in the Michael Bay series:

And after you’ve watched the movie, you can kick back and listen to Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories” album:

Both of these purchases are currently free (at least in the Canadian Google Play store) and I’ve got no clue for how long. Go cash in now! Now!

Kickstarter: Handground Precision Coffee Grinder

Yes I know I may have the early signs of a Kickstarter pledge addiction, but there are certain projects that just speak to me and this is one of them.

Simply put, the Precision Coffee Grinder from Handground is a hand-powered burr grinder that provides you 20 different coarseness levels to help you brew that perfect cup of joe.

And Lord knows I like me some quality coffee!

Tips for a First Time Cruiser

Can you believe that I’ll be boarding a cruise ship in California in just a couple of weeks? I sure can’t.

But you see, this will be the first time I’ve been on something bigger than a BC Ferry and I’m told that I shouldn’t consider the Queen of Surrey to a cruise ship.

So off to Twitter I went looking for some tips. And tips were exactly what my friend Dixon sent me. In fact, he sent me ten of them. Continue reading

Kickstarter: The Lonliest Whale

One way I pass time on a slow day is to peruse some of the projects looking for funding on Kickstarter. While it’s often a hobby that can be hard on my wallet (seriously, there’s so much neat stuff), I occasionally stumble across projects that really connect with me on a more emotional level.

Like the one searching for the elusive 52 hertz whale off the west coast of British Columbia.

For those who are unable to watch the embedded video, this project is looking to fund a research expedition to hunt for a whale that sings at 52 Hertz, a frequency that no other known whale responds to.

Originally discovered in the 1980s, this elusive whale has resided in the Pacific Ocean migrating from California up to Alaska and as far from shore as the mid-Pacific. And as it sings in a frequency that no other whale is known to communicate in, it has been assumed that this whale has lived much of its life in solitude.

As someone who’s grown up on the coast, I’ve always been inquisitive of life in the sea and would be lying if I didn’t admit that the story of “52” intrigues me.
