Far from Fit

If there’s one thing I need to do this year, it’s to get myself back into “shape.”

Growing up, I was constantly active. Whether it was playing organized sports, doing something during school or afterwards with friends, or simply hopping on the bike and going for a ride, I was always keeping the body in reasonably good condition. But as I got older, different activities dropped to the wayside. Soon, I started to suffer the odd “catastrophic” sports related injury. First there was the broken left ankle that ended my soccer playing career and then there was the ruptured left ACL which nearly ended my softball career. Each time I hurt myself, I simply cut back on the activities I was still participating in to the point that I really do little more than walk.

And that’s what scares me.

I’ve never been the type to head to a gym, but think that I’ve reached a point in my life where it’s definitely necessary. I just have no clue where to start. Further complicating matters is my affinity to the sin of sloth. And lastly, I feel that I’ve let myself go so far that I’ve gone beyond the point of no return.

So what do I do? Better yet, is there anyone else out there that’s in the same boat as me? What can we do together to rectify this sorry state we have placed ourselves in?

Christmas in Halfmoon Bay

As Marnie’s family lives on the Sunshine Coast and mine lives locally in Tsawwassen, the convenience of having everyone so close to home at Christmas is nice. Although it can be difficult to be in both places on Christmas Day, we try to alternate home and away every year to ensure our individual families don’t feel left out.

It’s actually been three years since we were last up with Marnie’s folks as her work schedule over the holidays hasn’t been too accommodating. Fortunately, her parents were able to swing down to our place in Steveston, so we were able to share the festive season with both of our families at the same time!

But back on topic, the trip up to Halfmoon Bay (which for those who are keeping track, happens to be just north of Sechelt) is always nice – especially this time of year. There’s a certain sense of reward when you leave the hustle and bustle of the city for the laid back village feel the Sunshine Coast possesses. And making it even better is the fantastic warmth and contentment I get sitting in front of a wood fired cast iron stove while listening to Christmas Carols softly playing in the background – our gas fireplace is nice, but it just isn’t the same. It will only be a quick trip up for a few days, but one that I’ve been looking forward to for weeks!

But it shouldn’t always be about me – what are your plans for the Christmas weekend?

I Heart my Tassimo

Quality + Convenience

If there’s one thing that I can’t seem to talk enough about, it’s how much I love my TASSIMO Coffee System. Serious. Whether it’s the simplicity of popping in a cartridge (known as a T-Disc) and brewing a perfect cup of joe, or the sheer speed it gets me my caffeine hit, what’s not to love?

Now before I continue, I must make a confession. I’m a coffee addict. Personally, I blame my days as a Shift Supervisor at Starbucks because there’s something about getting a free drink 30 minutes before your shift, a free drink on all 3 of your breaks, and a free drink up to 30 minutes after your shift that seems to do that. And don’t get me started on how I miss my partner discount. You know how expensive this addiction is?!

But more to the point, one of the reasons I didn’t always make myself a cup of coffee at home was the fact that I seemed to waste far more than what I needed. I tried and tried to find the correct proportions to brew myself the right amount, but unless I was putting through a whole pot, it never came out right. Not to mention, but the effort required to fire up the Barista Espresso Machine I had didn’t make sense either (although I could whip up a mean caramel macchiato – Chris knows how to make good foam). So having been looking for a solution to this conundrum, my eyes came across the Tassimo that I saw on sale and I was nearly hooked.

What made this story all better though, was the fact my sister no longer needed hers. Seeing the opportunity, we made a switch (Barista for Tassimo) and I’ve been pleased as punch since. Price wise, I’m not spending as much money on coffee out and about and yet with the convenience of having something at home, I’m not even thinking of heading out for a bevvie much either.

But enough about me. Have you tried the Tassimo? What are your thoughts?
