Social Media is a Conversation with Freddie

When it comes to social media, you could probably say I’m addicted.  While I dabble in different forms, my main vice is Twitter.  And there are definitely times when my prolific tweeting knows no boundaries.

I will tweet friends.  I will tweet friends of friends.  Heck, sometimes I’ll just tweet messages for the sake of telling everyone I had a roast beef sandwich for lunch (the worst kind of tweets, no?).

Yet if there’s one thing about Twitter I truly appreciate, it’s when other people out there who get social, actually “get social.”  It can be random people that engage.  It can be organizations with a genuine sense of humour.  Or the occasional (give or take) celebrity.

For instance, last night I saw the Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson (@BringerOfRain20) engage with Freddie Prinze Jr (@RealFPJr) regarding the former potentially getting a contract to face the Jays on their West Coast swing.  Now while the likelihood of that is slim to none, I felt the need to respond in my own way and suggest that Freddie’s experience in the movie Summer Catch.

Whether my tweet happened to catch his eye or he genuinely felt compelled to respond, Freddie engaged.

Now before you tell me that one tweet isn’t all that special, what’s important to note is that we didn’t stop there.  I responded and elicited a follow-up.  I think that’s what we in the biz call a conversation:

Humour aside, this is just a small microcosm of what I like about social media.  There is no way that I would’ve ever been able to have a chat with Freddie in real life considering how my sphere and his are so far apart, yet through the wondrous advancement of technology, Twitter makes that possible.

And it’s not just my ability to chat with Freddie.  It’s everyone else that I follow who allow me to be part of a giant global conversation.  It’s Canucks fans during the NHL season or Whitecaps FC supporters during the MLS year.  It’s fellow gamers and clanmates.  It’s you.

And that’s what is really neat about it all.

But I’m curious, have you had an experience such as this one?  Or what is it that binds you to the world of social if it’s not the same glue as me?  I’m truly quite curious.

Zero to Hero – Social Networking

With the past two weeks getting busier, I’ve been passively creeping the Zero to Hero challenge and only completing those assignments that were quick and easy to do (I know, I’m a horrible student).

But when I saw today’s assignment looking for us to start plugging into Social Media, I had to jump on board and give it a go.

You see, I’m already hooked up.

I regularly promote my blog posts through Twitter, Facebook and Google+. The fact I actually only really use those three medium to promote myself – boy do I sound narcissistic – actually comes as a surprise to some, but the reason behind it is quite simple.

I use those three more than any other.

I sometimes get asked by friends, family, co-workers and strangers for advice on how they can begin promoting themselves or their brand through social media. Often, they will tell me they’ve signed up through everything under the sun and expect to have a million or so followers in a week (I may be exaggerating here). I instead recommend they focus on something simple and more atenable – use the one or two they know, get good at it and then look to grow.

Throughout this, I also suggest they focus on being their authentic self. Be genuine and interact with everyone as you would on the street. I’m a firm believer that social media is more about people than information.

But there are smarter people than me out there – in fact, you might be one of them.

So what do you recommend one does when they decide it’s time to get on the social media bandwagon? Dive in? Keep it simple?

Zero to Hero – Who Am I?

Having just tied the knot (read all about it on Marriage in Maui), I thought it would be a blast to get back into the blogging game on a personal level. And whether it was by coincidence or good timing, I stumbled upon WordPress.com’s “Blogging 101 – Zero to Hero” post which aims to help beginning bloggers get their show on the road.

Kismet, right?

Well, today’s assignment is to tell you a little about myself and why I’m here.

This is me!

Hi. I’m Chris! I like long walks on a beach at sunset. I’m also slightly addicted to social media. I’m in to sports, and while never played hockey (on ice at least), am very passionate about the Vancouver Canucks. I also dig the Whitecaps FC, BC Lions, Vancouver Canadians too. I’ve actually been in this blogging game for close to a decade now, though I’ve never really picked up the knack at publishing regularly, let alone having a focus.

That, I’m hoping to change.

I plan on discussing my thoughts on the local sports teams here, my addiction to social media, video games (yes, I’m a nerd), and a little bit on what goes on here on the Left Coast. Sure those topics will mean a broad spectrum of appeal, but that’s me and I’m not sure I’m really ready to settle down yet.

But if you were me, what would you do? What interests you the most? What would bring you back here more than the casual visit? I’d love to here your thoughts down the comments!
