How many of you can wait 21 more days? Winter is coming.
For my two very loyal readers, you’ve probably been asking yourself where I’ve gone. Or at least you would be if you didn’t already follow me on twitter. Well I have a reason – TV. And I figured the best way to get back in the game was to tell you about it. Heck, I even decided to create a new category for this post (you can thank me later!).
Every second Monday I’ll be posting what I perceive to be my “Top 3” of whatever topic seems to float my boat that given week. This week it’s TV. Maybe next week it’s donuts. That’s the beauty of it all – I’m simply using the “Top 3” to get the brain in gear and the gears moving. I’m so brilliant.
So what are the the “Top 3 TV Shows Right Now” you ask?
Maybe I’m sick and twisted, but there is something I enjoy about the fate of humanity in a postapocalyptic, zombie infested world. While the second season has definitely been slower than last, The Walking Dead definitely picked up considerable steam in the mid-season cliffhanger – and has already been renewed for a third season.
Forming the tail end of my Sunday evening AMC hours (first The Walking Dead and then Hell on Wheels starting Sundays at 9 Eastern, 8 Central), Hell on Wheels provides me a little loose history as a Western-themed tale on the building of the mighty Union Pacific Railroad. Please keep in mind I did say “loose history.”
Now if there are any of you out there that don’t agree with this pick, then I’m not sure we can still be friends. After watching (and blogging about) last season’s 24/7 Penguins/Capitals, watching this lead up to the NHLs Winter Classic was a guarantee. We already have one of our most compelling “players” in Ilya Bryzgalov and I’m just waiting to see Tortorella go off on Brooksie.
Anyone know who I speak to about a 24/7 Canucks/Blackhawks series next year?
Game of Thrones
A series that had me so hooked that I’ve since read ALL FIVE books (yes, I read the first book after watching season one), Game of Thrones is the one that has me wishing April 2012 would simply come quicker. If you somehow missed the first season and want a quick recap, I’ll give you the 16-bit version:
Ice Pilots: NWT
While it was painful not to include Ice Pilots: NWT in the top three, the list wasn’t a top 4 and sometimes you have to make tough decisions. While the premise may seem simple, the “characters” from Buffalo Airways are the biggest win in the series – I swear I’d be able to strike up a conversation with nearly anyone in the company if I ever flew with Buffalo.
Growing up a rabid sports fan in Vancouver, my late evenings were not spent watching David Letterman or Jay Leno, but instead catching the latest news from the sporting world on SportsPage.
Whether it was hearing about Dave Randorf’s favourite ball player Jeff Kent, cashing in on some sweet loot during SportsPage trivia, or waiting all year to watch “Yulin’ with the Page” over the holidays, it was part of every sports fan’s lifestyle here in Van-city.
But as with all good things, the ‘Page was finally taken off the air with it’s last episode on September 2, 2005. It was tough to take, and I remember watching Dan Elliott (aka Jumbo) tear up when he signed off for the last time – I kid you not, I teared up too.
Anywho, over the past few weeks I’ve been tossing around the idea of trying to get SportsPage back on the tube with a few of the fine folks on twitter. Gladys (@gloomybb) in particular has been extremely gung-ho with the idea and got me thinking that I should start to harrass.. errr.. approach some of the hosts from the ‘Page in an effort to get the wheels on the bus moving. So thinking the best person on twitter to hit up was Scott Rintoul (currently of Team 1040 fame, but he cut his teeth on the ‘Page – @ScottRintoul on twitter), I gave him a holler and he said he’d be in. True, it’s simply a tweet and not a contract, but listen to him and Barry MacDonald talk about it this morning on the Team (hat tip to Gladys who got the audio):
Ringing endorsement, don’t you think?
So where do we go from here? How do we make this happen? Let’s get SportsPage 2.0 back on the air! Lord knows we need to see more playoff beards like this:
